Architecture Tour Series – “Celebrating Diversity in Atlanta Design Community”
The Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center
Architects: Goode Van Slyke Architecture (2014 NOMAtlanta Firm Member Sponsor)

Saturday, May 3, 2014 - NOMAtlanta hosted an exciting tour of one of the newest performing arts centers in Metro Atlanta, The Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center and Community Center in Decatur, Georgia, designed by 2014 NOMAtlanta Firm Member Sponsor, Goode Van Slyke Architecture (http://www.gvsa.com/). The tour featured Chris Goode, firm principal and design architect and Andy Powell, project manager.  Attendees were treated to a special behind the scenes tour with the design architects of this wonderful performing arts facility which featured two theatres, orchestra area, above theatre lighting catwalks, administrative offices, music classrooms, art gallery, event spaces and services areas.

The $20.7 million, 42,000 SF Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center was constructed in 2009 as a centerpiece for the arts for DeKalb County and Metro Atlanta.  Its diversity of artistic programs is housed in a structure that reflects the advancement of the arts.  Two types of theatres are housed in the facility.  The performance hall is acoustically tuned to host musical productions of various types and scales. The “black box” theater focuses on stage oriented theatrical productions.  The center also houses music classrooms for interactive learning.  The lobby is enhanced in size and design to accommodate assemblies, receptions and various gatherings.  (Project description taken from Goode Van Slyke project webpage)
